Kawau-wai-maori - River dwelling shag. E kore te kawau e meke i tōnu tu. The shag will not move from its perch where it stand

It is told that the kākā brought small pebbles back to Aotearoa each containing the mana of Hawaiki – the tapu land. ‘Ō kākā’ being food for the journey. 
E hara i te mea, he kotahi tangata nāna i whakaara te pō.
It is not something of recent times, but a tradition brought from Hawaiki.
