The wonderful Waimea Estuary hides behind Mapua, and stretches all the way to Nelson.

Many of my paintings feature the estuary and its characters. It has so many moods, brought on by the ever changing light, skies, and tides -  a proper smorgasbord for an artist!

There are seven characters depicted in this work  - two pied oystercatcers are heading off to join their mates resting on the far side, while a couple of shags are having a yarn in the safety of an island.

The background depicts Rabbit Island.

This work is a sister painting to "The Estuary at Low Tide", which is roughly the same place at a different time and tide.

The paintings work nicely on their own, or as a high-tide/low tide duo.

Buy the duo, and choose a small giclee print, compliments of the artist.

For this painting I used a palette knife to achieve the texture and brush work for a softer sky and water.
