This work was inspired by the morning light across Ngakuta Bay in the Marlborough Sounds, and a cheeky black backed gull hanging around the wharf. I lived in Marlborough for 15 years, prior to moving over the hill to Nelson, and got to know the Sounds really well. Now when I visit, it's usually with a bike, and this work was 'hatched' during a ride from Momorangi Bay through to Picton.
It is stylised to exaggerate the shapes of the Marlborough Sounds landscape and thick dark native bush in the area, and the gorgeous morning light across the water.
